Archaeology Doctoral Programme

The Archaeology Doctoral Programme at Pázmány Péter Catholic University, part of the Doctoral School of History, is dedicated to the archaeology and material culture of the period from the Roman era to the end of the Early Modern period, with a focus on both Europe and the Middle East. Much of the research conducted within the programme is based on the institute's own collections from domestic, European, and Near Eastern contexts, though research on other topics and materials is also welcomed.

The programme is offered in Hungarian for local students and in English for international candidates, with the option for Hungarian students to complete their theses in English. Students from six countries across three continents participate, creating a diverse academic environment. Scholarships and research opportunities are available to support exceptional students.

The programme emphasizes incorporating modern archaeological methods and techniques, particularly remote sensing and non-invasive methodologies. This approach is facilitated by the advanced equipment of the Archaeological Geoinformatics Laboratory at the University of Szeged.

Interdisciplinary collaboration is a key feature, with external co-directors supporting students' work. Nearly two dozen experts from various Hungarian and international institutions, including Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Hungarian University of Fine Arts, HUN-REN, University of Miskolc, Cardiff University, ACOR in Jordan, Damascus University, Kaslik University in Lebanon, and Claremont Graduate University in the United States, provide co-supervision and contribute to the programme's academic depth.
